I don't know what the face of Jesus looked like
Most painters down through the centuries seem to think he looked like Robert Powell
All I know is that Jesus was a Jew, and that's not enough for a meaningful portrait
These paintings are symbolic, and a stylized depiction of a hand looks as much like that of Christ as it needs to.
These images are of emotion and mood
Gethsemane - Let This Cup Pass
Christ The Divine cannot be killed
Christ The Divine cannot be hurt
If Jesus is to atone for the sins of all mankind - to actually take the punishment - then it's got to be real, it's got to hurt, he's really going to have to be tortured and killed
Christ The Divine can't do that, so it's going to have to be Christ The Man
But Christ The Man doesn't want to
Christ The Man is not stupid

Saturday
2011
This was the first image actually painted
Based on a sketch done while on an Easter retreat at
St Beuno's Ignatian Spirituality Centre in North Wales in 2006.
For all I know, the sketch is still there
(and yes, the sketch was done on the Saturday)

Sunday
Showing The Wounds
2011
Picking up on the idea used in the Saturday painting of not actually showing the left side of the hand or fingers
Just let the eye fill in the gaps

Friday
The Victory
2011
Everyone knows there's a cross so it doesn't need to be shown
This image is about suffering & endurance
If it makes you grit your teeth then so much the better

Sunday Morning
2014
Painted three years after the others, this is a latecomer in the series.
It is intended to depict the moment of resurrection.
The black area is actually quite glossy and the painting proved difficult to photograph, so it had to be Photoshopped to remove the shine.

Christmas
2011
This painting was done for a Christmas card
